This book is about a famous and beautiful mosque, and how it came to be built. It also tells the life-story of the man who gave the orders to build it. Ibn Tulun was the son of a Turkish slave soldier at the time of the Abbasid dynasty who, through his courage on the battle-field and his piety as a Muslim, rose to head a dynasty of his own in Egypt. At his time, Ibn Tulun was renowned for his bravery and skills as a warrior. Today, over 1000 years after his death, he is remembered for the magnificent mosque – one of the oldest built – which bears his name.

Written for children and young adults and beautifully colour illustrated, Ibn Tulun: the story of a Mosque traces the life of Ibn Tulun and explains how architects and craftsmen constructed his mosque, how workers maintained it, and how students studied in it. The book also traces the history of the mosque after Ibn Tulun's death; how for many years it was believed to be haunted, how it was turned into a wool factory and how it was once again restored to its former glory as one of the finest mosques in Islam.

Fiona Macdonald is the author of numerous childrens' books and Joan Ullathorne is an illustrator with a background in Islamic art and architecture.
