Many conquerors have been given the title "great" but few have deserved it more than Alexander. As a young boy he was taught by Aristotle to be a philosopher-king. Aged twenty he succeeded his father as King of Macedonia and proceeded to conquer all of the known world. However, not only was he a genius in the art of war, he was also a learned and cultured man. He did not enslave or destroy the peoples he conquered, but tried to create a world in which different races could live at peace with one another.
Written in a style suitable for children aged 9 to 12, and with colour illustrations, Alexander the Great is part of the HEROES FROM THE EAST series.
Denys Johnson-Davies is a well-known author of children's books and is also the leading translator of modern Arabic literature. Ashley Manning has a masters degree from The Prince of Wales's Institute of Architecture.
